The Story- God Builds a Nation

Pastor Katie Kringstad

PRELUDE/BELL

WELCOME: P: “The Lord be with you!   R:   And also, with you

GATHERING

This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.

The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Gathering Song: Why Should I Feel Discouraged

His Eye Is on the Sparrow

1    Why should I feel discouraged,

why should the shadows come,

why should my heart be lonely

and long for heav’n and home,

when Jesus is my portion?

My constant friend is he:

his eye is on the sparrow,

and I know he watches me;

his eye is on the sparrow,

and I know he watches me.

Refrain

I sing because I’m happy,

I sing because I’m free,

for his eye is on the sparrow,

and I know he watches me.

2     “Let not your heart be troubled,”

his tender word I hear,

and resting on his goodness,

I lose my doubts and fears;

though by the path he leads me

but one step I may see:

his eye is on the sparrow,

and I know he watches me;

his eye is on the sparrow,

and I know he watches me.

Refrain

3    Whenever I am tempted,

whenever clouds arise,

when song gives place to sighing,

when hope within me dies,

I draw the closer to him,

from care he sets me free:

his eye is on the sparrow,

and I know he watches me;

his eye is on the sparrow,

and I know he watches me.

Refrain

Peace

Confession and Forgiveness (ELW p. 94).

Prayer of the Day

Let us pray. A brief silence is kept before the prayer.

Generous God, your Son gave his life that we might come to peace with you. Give us a share of your Spirit, and in all we do empower us to bear the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

CHILDREN’S MOMENT

READING: Genesis 12:1-3

1Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. 2I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

PSALM: Psalm 19:7-14

7The teaching of the Lord is perfect and re- | vives the soul;    the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom | to the simple.

8The statutes of the Lord are just and re- | joice the heart;    the commandment of the Lord is clear and gives light | to the eyes.

 9The fear of the Lord is clean and en- | dures forever;    the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous | altogether.

10More to be desired are they than gold, more than | much fine gold,    sweeter far than honey, than honey | in the comb. R

 11By them also is your ser- | vant enlightened,    and in keeping them there is | great reward.

12Who can detect one’s | own offenses?    Cleanse me from my | secret faults.

 13Above all, keep your servant from presumptuous sins; let them not get dominion | over me;    then shall I be whole and sound, and innocent of a | great offense.

14Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable | in your sight,    O Lord, my strength and | my redeemer. R

HYMN OF THE DAY: Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound (ELW 779) VS 1-3

Gospel: Matthew 18:15-22

15If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. 16But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. 18Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them."  21Then Peter came and said to him, "Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?" 22Jesus said to him, "Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times.

Sermon Pastor Katie- Sermon 1 The Story

Hymn of the Day:Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound (ELW 779) VS 4-5

Apostles’ Creed (ELW p. 152)

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.*

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession

Drawn together in the power of the Holy Spirit, we pray with confidence for the church, God’s good creation, and all who are in need.

A brief silence.

We pray for the people of God in all places. Shape our witness to the good news of Jesus that we joyfully share your transforming love with all whom we encounter. Hear us, O God.

Your mercy is great.

We pray for the healing of the earth. Renew oceans and seas, marshes and estuaries. Uphold the work of conservationists, oceanographers, and all who care for fragile ecosystems and habitats. Hear us, O God.

Your mercy is great.

We pray for peace and cooperation among local and global communities. Bless the efforts of community organizers, international aid workers, and all those who work for justice and peace around the world. Hear us, O God.

Your mercy is great.

We pray for all who are in any need. To all who grieve, bring consolation; to all who are weary or lonely, bring solace. By your grace, make your presence known among all who call to you for healing. Hear us, O God.

Your mercy is great.

We pray for caregivers: doctors and nurses, home health aides and counselors, and those who care for loved ones. Sustain them in their work and help us to build a health care system that supports all. Hear us, O God.

Your mercy is great.

We give thanks for the saints who now rest in your eternal presence. In thanksgiving for their lives of faithful service and witness, we commend them to your loving care. Hear us, O God.

Your mercy is great.

We entrust these and all our prayers to you, holy God, in the name of your beloved child, Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Amen.
