PRELUDE/BELL

WELCOME/ANNOUNCEMENTS:

CALL TO WORSHIP

We gather in the name of the Creator,

inviting us always to risk the unknown.

We gather in the name of the Christ,

fully human, fully divine, full of gift and mystery.

We gather in the name of the Spirit,

unveiling for us what feels long-hidden. Amen.

GATHERING SONG:  Beautiful Savior (#838) vs. 1-2

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray.  A brief silence is kept before the prayer.

O God, when the world feels like choppy seas, it’s easy to turn inward. Grant us courage to face the unknown, the hard decisions, the cost of doing what is right. Amen.

CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS

CHILDREN’S MOMENT – Back to school blessing (Norman Only)

BLESSING FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR

Backpacks and school supplies remind us that school is beginning for students of all ages.  Children begin preschool and kindergarten; others are moving up in elementary grades. Youth are moving to middle school and high school. Adults of all ages are attending colleges, universities, and other places of learning.

We thank you, O Lord, for books and playgrounds, for new friends and field trips, for crayons and computers, for classrooms and recess.

We are called to pray for, support, and encourage students of all ages and abilities.

We thank you for the excitement of a new school year and for new discoveries that will spark imaginations and expand knowledge.

We lift up backpacks that will carry books and papers, drawings and markers, lunches, and snacks.

Bless those who will carry and wear backpacks that they may know and be surrounded by your love.

We lift up all forms of technology used in education.  May these gifts be used wisely and responsibly.

Bless those who will be using and teaching the gifts of technology that they may use them responsibly and explore new ways to use them.

We pray for students of all ages as they begin this new school year.

Spirit of God, grant the gifts of wisdom and understanding to all students.

May they experience excitement in learning and take delight in new discoveries.

We pray for bus drivers and all who transport students to school. We pray for kitchen workers and all who prepare and serve food. We pray for custodial staff and all who clean and maintain facilities and equipment for safe use.

Spirit of God, we give thanks for all who provide safe travel, those working in food service and maintenance duties. Bless them in their ministry of service.

We pray for all educators, office staff, counselors, coaches, administrators, and board members.

Spirit of God, may those in authority share their knowledge with gentleness and patience and exercise wise judgment in their decisions.

(All) For all the gifts of education and especially for students and all those involved in the ministry of learning, decision-making, and maintenance of facilities, we give you thanks and praise.  Through your gracious and loving hand bless them and bless this year of learning. Amen.

Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY: This is My Father’s World (#824)

SCRIPTURE: Acts 27:1, 9-11

SERMON: Pastor Katie

OFFERING SONG: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty (#413) vs. 1-3

OFFERING PRAYER:

God of every good thing, you provide for us in every season of our lives. Help us to open our hands, open our lives, to your whole creation, that we might prioritize justice over wealth, truth over reputation, people over profits. Amen.

PRAYER FOR FARMERS:

Dear Lord, thank you for the protection You offer all of us. You have promised to care for those who have put their trust in you. And we know that You also bless those that don’t even know you as Lord because You are a loving God. Watch over the farmers who put themselves in harm's way to make a living for themselves and their families and provide the food resources for the rest of us.

Please give them the alertness they need when dealing with unyielding animals, cantankerous machinery, and unsafe weather conditions. Father, we thank you for the farmer. We are so blessed to have men and women willing to put in the time and toil it takes to produce crops and livestock. Thank you for blessing their efforts to produce healthy foods that provide the family’s nourishment and enjoyment. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

  BLESSING

“May the Lord bless you and keep you

the Lord make his face shine upon you      and be gracious to you;  the Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.”

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

SENDING HYMN: Beautiful Savior (#838) vs. 3-4
