*Norman Lutheran Members New Project Announcement-

Beginning this Wednesday, during the Lenten meals at Norman we will have tables set up for group “Listening Sessions: Strengthening Our Church Together”. These tables will be sorted by years of tenure. 0-5yrs, 5-14yrs and 15+ years.  Please join us to help us (the council) understand how we can grow together as a church family closer to Christ.

God has richly blessed our Church with significant growth the past 5+ years. How we look and function today is night and day different from what we looked like prior to Pastor Katie’s arrival, and our future is incredibly bright. Where we used to largely be in “reactive mode” for many years, we are now at a point where our Council wants to help guide our Church in a proactive manner for the next 5+ years. To do that, we want feedback from each of you to help guide our strategy in core Church-related areas such as our: Church community: connect and serve, community events, youth group, etc  Worship services: Sunday school: Confirmation:

Our church is built on faith, community, and a shared mission to grow together. As we look toward the future, we want to hear from you! We invite all members to come eat and participate in “Listening Sessions: Strengthening Our Church Together,” a series of listening sessions designed to gather thoughts and ideas on what’s working well and where we can grow as a church family. This is a great opportunity to share, connect, and help us strengthen our church for generations to come. We hope you’ll join us in this important conversation! Electronic and paper feedback forms will also be available to those who cannot participate in the live discussions but have ideas and feedback they would like to provide.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

GATHERING SONG: Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound (779) vs 1-3                                                             Peace                                                                                                                                                                               Confession and Forgiveness (ELW p. 94).

In the name of the Father,

and of the  Son,

and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.  Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence is kept for reflection.

Most merciful God,

ALL-     we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.

Amen.

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the  Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Kyrie

In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

For the peace from above,

and for our salvation,

let us pray to the Lord.

For the peace of the whole world,

for the well-being of the Church of God,

and for the unity of all,

let us pray to the Lord.

For this holy house,

and for all who offer here their worship and praise,

let us pray to the Lord.

Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

Canticle of Praise

Glory to God in the highest,

and peace to God’s people on earth.

PRAYER OF THE DAY:  (Unison)

Let us pray. A brief silence is kept before the prayer.

ALL-   O Lord God, you led your people through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. Guide us now, so that, following your Son, we may walk safely through the wilderness of this world toward the life you alone can give, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

LORD’S PRAYEROur Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

forever and ever. Amen.

Reading: Nehemiah 1:1-9

1The words of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah. In the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year, while I was in Susa the capital, 2one of my brothers, Hanani, came with certain men from Judah; and I asked them about the Jews that survived, those who had escaped the captivity, and about Jerusalem. 3They replied, "The survivors there in the province who escaped captivity are in great trouble and shame; the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been destroyed by fire."4When I heard these words I sat down and wept, and mourned for days, fasting and praying before the God of heaven. 5I said, "O Lord GOD of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments; 6let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Both I and my family have sinned. 7We have offended you deeply, failing to keep the commandments, the statutes, and the ordinances that you commanded your servant Moses. 8Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, 'If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples; 9but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts are under the farthest skies, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place at which I have chosen to establish my name.'

Psalm: Psalm 91:1-2, 9-16

1 You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High,  who abide in the shadow of the Almighty— 2you will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my stronghold,  my God in whom I put my trust.” 9 Because you have made the Lord your refuge,  and the Most High your habitation, 10no evil will befall you,  nor shall affliction come near your dwelling.11 For God will give the angels charge over you,  to guard you in all your ways. 12Upon their hands they will bear you up,  lest you strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread upon the lion cub and viper;  you will trample down the lion and the serpent. 14I will deliver those who cling to me;  I will uphold them, because they know my name.15 They will call me, and I will answer them;  I will be with them in trouble; I will rescue and honor them. 16With long life will I satisfy them,  and show them my salvation.

Hymn of the Day: How Great Thou Art (ELW 856) vs 1-2

Gospel: Mark 1:1-8

The holy gospel according to Mark.

Glory to you, O Lord.

1The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.2As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, "See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; 3the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,'"4John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7He proclaimed, "The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

The gospel concludes:

The gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON: Pastor Katie Kringstad

Hymn OF THE DAY: How Great Thou Art (ELW 856) vs 3-4

Apostles’ creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.*

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession

Led by the Spirit, let us turn to God in prayer for the church, the world, and all those in need.  A brief silence.

Gracious God, speak your word anew among your church. Strengthen it to withstand the temptation to turn inward in fear or complacency. Embolden church institutions to turn from self-preservation toward the self-giving love of Jesus. God, in your mercy,  ALL-  receive our prayer.

Mothering God, speak the word of life into wilderness places and fertile fields. Grant wisdom to your people, that we may quell the urge to strip lands of their resources and instead preserve first fruits for future generations. God, in your mercy,  ALL-  receive our prayer.

Almighty God, speak a word of wisdom to people in positions of power: mayors, councils, and tribal leaders, legislators, judges and juries, presidents, and monarchs. Help them discern your voice and follow your guidance, resisting the temptations of the evil one. God, in your mercy, ALL-  receive our prayer.

Steadfast God, speak words of courage to your people in the wilderness. Protect migrants and refugees on perilous journeys, that they find safe refuge and a portion in the bounty you have given humanity to share. God, in your mercy,  ALL- receive our prayer.

Loving God, speak gently to all who are alone. Bless lay ministers, home communion teams, and others who attend to those who are overlooked, vulnerable, or lonely, that all find belonging in your love. We pray for all who are ill. God, in your mercy,  ALL- receive our prayer.

Living God, we give thanks for all the faithful who have crossed the threshold from death to life. Guide us who are living to learn from their wisdom and follow their example. God, in your mercy, ALL- receive our prayer.

Receive the prayers of your people and draw all things together in your love, in the name of Jesus, who leads us from death to life.Amen.
