*2025 BIBLE STUDY STARTING UP

Hello Norman-Davenport Family!

The start date for our 2025 Bible Reading Group is only 2 days away! Many of you are familiar with this program from last year, but I wanted to send out an invitation in case you missed it last time and would like to join us!

This year will look a bit different as I am not planning on holding regular in-person meetings as we did last year. I will, however, send out weekly emails to the group with helpful resources, inspiration and encouragement, and information regarding potential fellowship opportunities. The main goal of The Bible Recap is to help you read, understand, and love the Bible. My main goal is to encourage you in your journey because I believe so strongly that reading God's Word is a worthy pursuit that will benefit you in ways you will not expect or could not have imagined!

Summary of how The Bible Recap works:

  • STEP 1: Starting January 1st, you will begin the daily reading plan that is usually 2-4 chapters long. For the daily reading, you can use any Bible you have. The program uses the English Standard Version, but any version will do! There is also a Bible app (YouVersion) you can use on your phone to automatically listen to each day’s daily reading in your car or at home if you would like.

  • STEP 2: Once you finish the reading, you then read or listen to the "Recap" in your Bible Recap book (if you order one), or via The Bible Recap's YouTube channel or Podcast. (Amazon link to purchase book: https://a.co/d/2BuI397)

Helpful resources to check out before you start/commit:

  • If you'd like to know more about The Bible Recap, view this short video of its author, Tara-Leigh Cobble, explaining what it is all about: https://youtu.be/VGLPf6CfS3A.

·                Check out the "Start Page" of The Bible Recap website: https://www.thebiblerecap.com/start.

·                The six "Prep Episodes" on the "Start Page" are especially helpful to review before we begin (but not required). They take about 60 minutes total to listen to and are well worth the time investment.

·                You can download/print your copy of the year-long reading plan here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_kmgcFvlwn5r_3P5Nk1XibrsPTAFRWxT/view

You may be feeling nervous about the time commitment needed. If so, I encourage you to start thinking now about how you will make time in your day to spend with God in His Word (20-25 minutes is a good estimate of the time it takes to complete each day). If you are still nervous, ask God to take away your apprehension and make a way for you to do this. He can do so much more than we can imagine! Then, give yourself grace. You may have days where you do not have the time or headspace to complete the reading. Please do not put pressure on yourself. You will hear Tara-Leigh say over and over "Wherever you're at, you're right on time." God sees you and knows what you need to hear, when you need to hear it.

It's not too late for people to join you, too, so please spread the word to others that you think might enjoy it!

Please reach out to me via email, phone, or text if you have any questions!

CHILDREN’S MOMENT – Children to Sunday school

READING: Ephesians 1:3-14

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. 5 He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight 9 he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 11 In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12 so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14 this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.

Psalm: Psalm 147:12-20

12 Worship the Lord, | O Jerusalem;  praise your | God, O Zion, ALL13who has strengthened the bars | of your gates  and has blessed your children within you.14 God has established peace | on your borders  and satisfies you with the | finest wheat.

ALL- God sends out a command | to the earth,  a word that runs | very swiftly. R16 God gives | snow like wool,  scattering | frost like ashes. ALL-God scatters | hail like bread crumbs.  Who can stand against God’s cold?18 The Lord sends forth the | word and melts them;  the wind blows, and the | waters flow.    ALL-God declares the | word to Jacob,  statutes and judgments to Israel.20 The Lord has not done so to any | other nation;  they do not know God’s judgments. | Hallelujah! R

Hymn of the Day: As with Gladness Men of Old (302) vs 1-3

Gospel: John 1:[1-9] 10-18                                                                                                                                       [1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.  6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.]  10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.  14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. 15 (John testified to him and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ ”) 16 From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.

SERMON: Pastor Kathy Valan

Hymn OF THE DAY: As with Gladness Men of Old (302) vs 4-5

Apostles’ creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.*

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession

Filled with good news of great joy, let us offer our prayers for the church, the earth, and all people. A brief silence.

O God, you reveal yourself in this assembly. In water, wine, and bread, show us again and again your grace upon grace, that your church boldly testifies to your love. God of grace,

ALL-receive our prayer.

You reveal yourself in creation. In seedlings and planets, microorganisms and galaxies, awaken us to the cry of the earth. As you nourish your people like a watered garden, empower us to nourish our creaturely companions. God of grace, receive our prayer.

You reveal yourself in every land and in the farthest parts of the earth. Deliver peoples who suffer under oppressive regimes. Thwart the foolish plans of unjust leaders. Give wisdom to our elected officials God of grace, receive our prayer.

You reveal yourself in every human being. Help us recognize your image in our siblings in Christ who are in the strong grip of addiction, depression, anxiety, hopelessness, or other illness. Grant us compassion in our care for your people. God of grace, receive our prayer.

You reveal yourself anew every day. In this new year, renew this congregation and its ministries in our witness to the good news of the incarnation. Transform the way we have always done things into your new future for us. God of grace, receive our prayer.

You reveal yourself in the lives of your holy ones. We give you thanks for those who set their hope on you, trusting the inheritance we receive in you. God of grace, receive our prayer.

We commend these prayers to you, O God, trusting your grace made known to all, through the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Sending God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world.
